                                                                                                              All

May I draw your attention to the situation regarding BMFA insurance cover?

It is a club requirement that members are also members of the BMFA. Membership of BMFA includes their standard insurance cover.

Some members of the club make their payments for BMFA membership through the club membership secretary Brain Fuller; whereas others obtain their BMFA membership through other clubs or by applying direct to BMFA.

Where the member pays his BMFA membership through Brian, Brian issues a temporary BMFA membership card to the member – this is valid for 2 months. Brian then submits the member details to BMFA, who in due course issue their formal membership card and certificate of insurance to Brian. Brian signs the document as club membership secretary before sending it to the member.

To avoid doubt about insurance cover in the event of a member having an accident before receipt of the formal document. I have clarified the position with BMFA as follows and they have confirmed this as the formal position:

1                    The membership secretary keeps a record of all temporary membership cards which he has issued with details of the payments made and dates.

2                    The membership sectary sends payments to the BMFA on the BMFA Club payment form, which has provision for several members on each submission and as such is generally a batch submission of more than one member.

3                    In the event of there being a claim and for any reason whatsoever, the BMFA not having a record of the member – typically this is most likely to be the result of the application being in process and not yet received by BMFA – The Insurers will ask for a copy of the club membership secretary’s records giving details of the receipt of the payment. On receipt of this record, the Insurers will proceed with the claim as if the documentation track had been fully completed.

4                    BMFC will have no responsibility other than to ensure that the records are correct.

To ensure that you are covered by the BMFA insurance, it is important that you do the following:

Members obtaining BMFA membership through the Club:

Ensure that you either have a temporary BMFA membership card and that its validity has not expired, or that you are in receipt of the formal BMFA membership card and Individual Members Confirmation of Cover.

Members obtaining BMFA membership in other ways:

Ensure that you either have a temporary BMFA membership card and that its validity has not expired, or that you are in receipt of the formal BMFA membership card and Individual Members Confirmation of Cover.

And

Send or hand a copy of your BMFA membership card to Brian.

It is a condition of the Club and Committee Insurance cover that the Club Membership Secretary confirms to the BMFA that “every flying or organising member of the club is a BMFA member and that failure to comply with these conditions in full may invalidate Club and Committee insurance cover”

Regrettably, to meet the conditions of the Club insurance I have to inform you that anyone not complying with the above will not be allowed to fly on any of the club sites.
